Newly Merged Villages of Municipal Corporation, Mohali Await Punjab Government Clarity
Dear Editor/Correspondent,
Please find enclosed a press note, in English, Hindi and Punjabi, on the need for clarity from the Punjab Government on several outstanding issues concerning the fifteen villages recently merged into Municipal Corporation, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali).
By way of background: the merger, notified on 28 November 2025, has been generally welcomed by landowners and residents, but a number of practical questions remain unanswered — including the status of shamilat (village common) land on merger, continuity of MGNREGA and PMAY-Gramin welfare eligibility, building-plan sanction requirements within Lal Lakir and abadi deh, and whether the three-year property tax exemption given to earlier-merged areas will apply here as well. KBS Sidhu, retired IAS officer and former Special Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab, has written to the Chief Secretary, Punjab, seeking a consolidated clarification from the government on these points.
This may be used from the morning of 28 August 2026.
Please do get in touch for any clarification or additional comment.
With regards,
KBS Sidhu
